Breadner Elementary Gets Some Green to Go Even Greener
May 16, 2006
EarthCARE coordinator, Betty Kuhn and Principal, Sandra MacDonald are excited about their newest greening project. The students of Breadner Elementary School received a surprise grant of $2000 from the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds to help transform their schoolyard. The Toyota
Evergreen Learning Grounds Programme is a national programme available to schools across the country. The money will be used to purchase approved native plant species that possess certain traits that make them uniquely adaptable to local conditions. This interactive hands-on
approach includes the planting of native trees, shrubs, wild flowers, grass, aquatic and vine species. The Breadner staff and students will be creating a memorial walkway of trees, leading to a seating area, which will be available for students during recess and classes for outdoor learning.
Kathleen Sutherland, a primary special education teacher of the William R. Kirk School satellite class at Breadner, made the application on
behalf of Breadner School staff and students. She hopes to add birdhouses and further expand the possibilities for habitat, as the project expands.
With the arrival of spring, the students who have worked diligently behind the scenes planning the development are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the elements that will bring this garden to life.
