A Heartfelt Garden Craft

April 16, 2009

Students from the PLAN (People Learning About Nature) Club at Breadner Public School were very busy last week creating garden stones. When asked if they might present their stone as a gift to someone they care about, Jessica said that she was making her garden stone for her Dad who is currently posted to Afghanistan. Kiersten said that she was going to give her garden stone to "Grandma who has cancer again". Others thought they might give them to Mom on Mother’s Day or Dad on Father’s Day…Gifts from the heart are always appreciated. Take a bow, students of the PLAN Club!

If you would like to make your own garden stone follow these easy steps.

  1. Grease a plastic plant tray with vegetable oil using a paper towel.
  2. Choose approximately 25 marbles, stones or shells to create a design.
  3. Decide on your pattern or arrangement prior to adding to the cement.
  4. Mix cement. A large bag will make about 12 garden stones. The easiest way to mix the cement is to pour some into a large, reusable zippered plastic bag. Half a bag of cement will do one large stone. Add water until cement is the consistency of watery pudding. Mix by massaging the plastic bag.
  5. Pour cement into plastic tray.
  6. Arrange your stones, shells and marbles according to your plan.
  7. Dry for about 24-48 hours.

Enjoy!
