Breadner Team Busy Again This Year!
May 29, 2011
During a recent visit to Breadner Elementary, EarthCARE Coordinator Veronica Ford was extremely pleased and impressed with the many activities the P.L.A.N. club (People/Pupils Learning About Nature) had on-the-go this year. Once again under the guidance and direction of Betty Kuhn, the club met once a week to work together with the common goal of ‘making a difference’.
The activities/events included:
- A bulletin board contest with an Earth Day Theme (animal protection, good choices, recycling, caring quilt etc.). Every class in the school participated and received certificates and prizes.
- EarthCARE crafts – the team of 36 students worked on planting gardens; creating garden stones; making bird feeders; decorating t-shirts; rock painting and more.
- The EarthCARE team took a field trip to the recycling plant –Quinte Waste Solutions.
- The Toronto Dominion Bank with their program Friends of the Peregrine were invited to present information to the students during an assembly, after which the Breadner students adopted 4 peregrine falcons themselves. Frequently the students go to the website peregrine-foundation.ca to see nesting peregrines and they receive updates on their adopted birds.
- The EarthCARE team put their COMOTION – Computers Off, Monitors Off, Turn It Off Now acrostic to the tune Locomotion and follow-up with inspections of the classrooms. Successful rooms are given Thank you certificates while others are given ‘Our Earth Needs You’ reminders.
- Each year a student is chosen from the P.L.A.N. club to receive an environment award (a plaque donated by a former teacher from Breadner) honoring his/her participation and leadership in the club.
- The school purchased the Planet Earth DVD and the students viewed this presentation along with the BBC series: Grass
- Future plans include Greening the Property- A Peace Garden Walkway and seating area for quiet reflection or talking with friends is in the works. “This seemed very appropriate for a school on the Canadian Armed Forces Base”, remarked Ms. Kuhn.
Take a bow, Breadner staff and students!
