Centre Hastings Staff and Students Kick Start School Year with Many Possibilities!

By Mrs. Neumann Stephens, EarthCARE teacher lead

The fourth week of March Centre Hastings students and staff held a Water Awareness Week – they had interesting facts about water and water bottle consumption on the announcements each day. The students did a display in the front foyer where they filled the showcase with a week's worth of plastic water bottles collected from recycling bins and then paired the bottles with more water bottle facts. They sold CHSS steel water bottles at lunch hours. Finally, the students conducted a water taste test during two lunch periods where they put bottled spring water up against Madoc tap water and asked students to choose which they liked better. Madoc tap didn't win, but it lost by only 9 votes - not bad!

On Friday, March 25th the staff and students also participated in Earth Hour – they shut down the lights for the first 20 minutes of each of their classes. Many of the students also participated in Earth Hour at home - Mrs. Neumann Stephens' grade 9 academic geography class also registered online to participate in Earth Hour on the WWF website.

Take a bow, Centre Hastings staff and students!
