Extreme Green Team's tree bulletin board

Coe Hill's 'greened' up foyer
Coe Hill Inspires Us With Their Many Projects!
March 17, 2007
Coe Hill students take their commitment to EarthCare very seriously. In September,
our Extreme Green Team created a bulletin board with a tree bare of leaves
on it. It is our goal to add a leaf for every initiative we participate in,
in hopes of having a tree full of leaves by June. Look how far we have come!
Here is a list of some of the events we have provided for our school.
- The students decided to "green up" our front foyer. They took an area that
contained 3 drab chairs and created an oasis by adding shelves, potted plants
and a garden bench. It is a very inviting place to stop and take a break. Students
rotate watering and taking care of the plants weekly.
- An oasis just wouldn't be right without a resident. The Extreme Green Team
purchased a Beta fish to live among the plants. They ran a contest for the
perfect name. The winner was awarded with her choice of an EarthCare yo-yo,
strap or pencil. The winning name was Cuddles. Thanks Kendall.
- The grade 1 and 2 class adopted a homeless gold fish and salamander from a shallow pond insert. The pond freezes solid and had little mud at the bottom of it for the salamander to hibernate for the winter. The class researched and created a muddy home for Sal and he is now
sleeping peacefully until spring. Speedy the goldfish swims happily around his bowl, thankful that he has a warmer home for the winter. Both
animals will be placed back in the pond in the spring.
- The Extreme Green Team made over 100 hundred peanut butter and bird seed feeders to sell at our Christmas fun day.
- Students continue to write and read daily announcements reminding staff and students of our commitment to be the greenest school around. Thanks for organizing this Brittany.
- On November 28th, we held our first Loonie Milkshake Day. Members of the Extreme Green Team advertised, took orders and delivered milkshakes to the students in order to raise money for garden benches for our playground. They have also planned 2 more days for January.
- The school has adopted a "you bring it, you take it" policy with lunches
in hopes of making students and parents aware of the amount of garbage our
lunches can create. Students are asked to pack the garbage from their lunches
back into their bag after lunch and take it home.
The next step for our team is to begin a letter writing campaign to Tim Horton's
regarding their un-recyclable cups. It is our belief that if they are as community
oriented as they claim, they should provide cups that can be recycled in order
to cut down on waste going to the land fill. It is our challenge to other schools
participating in EarthCare to undertake similar action. Change has to be made
sooner rather than later.
