Earth Day plans underway at Harmony and Maynooth!

April 11, 2006

Earth Day may fall on a Saturday, but schools are still planning lots of activities.

On the afternoon of April 21st, an assembly at Maynooth Public School will kick off a school wide cleanup. The staff and students have registered with Pitch-In Canada, which provided the garbage bags for the cleanup. Following the assembly, there will be discussions with the students and the presentation of Earth day stickers. A broom-sweeping contest will take place a recess times. Hopefully all the excess dirt on the pavement will be soon gone with the winning sweeper being awarded a prize.

The team at Harmony came up with several ideas. During the month of April, a school wide garbage competition will take place. The class that accumulates the least amount of garbage for the month wins a pizza party! The school newsletter will contain the Eco Kids calendar on which information, tips, ideas and jokes pertaining to Earth Day will be provided!

A yard clean up will take place on April 21st. Not only will all of the classes participate in a school yard clean up, they will also clean up the neighbouring Thurlow fields as well. The students will all be encouraged to ‘wear green’ that day.

Earth Day bookmarks with tips, ideas and flower seeds will be given out so that they can spread the word and plantings can take place at home.
