Foxboro Staff and Students 'Kick-start' Earth Week!

May 29, 2011

Foxboro staff and students gathered to talk about the year's successes to date. The EarthCARE teacher rep Diane Loiselle congratulated the students on their efforts with the Waste Free lunch challenge and many more projects. The staff and students were also challenged with a presentation by EarthCARE coordinator Veronica Ford and a pledge from the EarthCARE team.

Ford shared facts about one of our great natural resources – water. Did you know that 70 % of the Earth's surface is water and that only 3 % is accessible? Did you also know that we as Canadians rank 2nd in the world in terms of water usage? We use 35 % of our water daily for showers and baths.

She asked the students if they could pledge to cut back on their daily usage by doing some of the things mentioned on The Roots and Shoots Canada website:

  • Cutting back on showers
  • Filling bathtubs only half way
  • Turning the tap off while brushing teeth
  • Getting more than one use out of a towel
  • Talking to parents about repairing leaky taps and toilets
  • Not using toilets as wastepaper baskets
  • Not running water while rinsing dishes when doing them by hand
  • Only running dishwashers when they are totally full
  • Limiting the use of bottled water and keeping a pitcher of cold water in the refrigerator

Ford then continued to talk about the use of tap water versus bottled water. The EarthCARE team ended the assembly by challenging the students to purchase reusable water bottles and "take back the tap".

By making this commitment to help save the earth's natural resource - water, the staff and students of Foxboro Public School certainly demonstrate that they truly care about the earth.

Good luck with this challenge, Foxboro!
