Healthy Active School Communities - Another Fit for EarthCARE!

May 16, 2006

Hastings and Prince Edward DSB's Healthy Active Living Conference

The EarthCARE program in Hastings and Prince Edward DSB was customized to support and enhance their Character Education and Healthy Active Living programs. A session on making links among EarthCARE, Healthy Active Living and Character Education was offered at the Hastings and Prince Edward DSB's Healthy Active Living Conference on Tuesday, February 7, 2006.

The opening keynote speaker, Dr Andy Anderson, Associate Professor with OISE, stressed the importance of health-promoting schools and the need for a shift in teacher thinking from "we're overloaded already" to "we're building knowledge." He emphasized linking learning to health (care for self, others and the environment) and teaching students to transfer learning in school to life outside and beyond school.

The 'Making Links' session fit well with the values and actions promoted by Dr. Anderson. Following a presentation on how the EarthCARE program is fitting into their schools (download the PowerPoint file 4mb), Gail Brant, Principal at Susanna Moodie, and Stacey Belanger, Principal at Harmony, tasked the participants to generate 'links' among the three programs. As well, Gail and Stacey shared documents that articulated Ontario curriculum connections with various subject areas and the three programs. Download these documents as PDFs, Grade 1 Curriculum Links and Grade 7 Curriculum Links.

The conference, organized by Nancy Popovich, was held at the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board Office for approximately 50 participants.
