2005/2006 Summary of HPEDSB Secondary School EarthCARE Activities

The following is a summary of the information included in the participation reports submitted for the spring audit.

Energy:

1. LOCO Initiatives:
   1. Signs
   2. Homeroom presentations
   3. Announcements/ reminders (e.g., at end of the day)
   4. Posters
   5. Dancing though the halls to Locomotion song at lunch
   6. Computer technician support
   7. EC Team spot checks throughout the year to make sure computers off when not being used
   8. Discussions with IT and classroom teachers reminding students to turn off computers
2. Light timers in some areas of the school
3. Energy quiz for homerooms
4. Brainstorming with staff during staff meeting about energy-saving solutions
5. Staff-wide email encouraging lights off, computers off
6. Natural lighting in Spring and Fall when lights not necessary

Water:

1. Custodial staff asked to report any leaks to maintenance staff ASAP
2. Water pollution activities in grade 10 science
3. Announcements
4. Prizes
5. Spoke to staff about showers in change rooms being left running

Waste:

1. System for collecting blue boxes changed and more of the boxes were distributed
2. Improved school recycling program
3. Reduce, reuse, recycle weekly announcements over PA system
4. "Enviro guy and tree hugger girl" dressed up and circulate in halls to promote and photograph environmental stewards in action
5. Earth Day clean up of trash in the community
6. Full recycling program run by students

Other:

1. New sprinkler system for new playing field was installed with a sensor system that turns the water on as needed
2. Spring clean-up
3. Water ecology in grade 10 science
4. Students and staff asked to contribute used printer cartridges for recycling/fundraising program
5. Greenhouse
6. Outdoors club
7. Tree-planting
8. "Pitch-in Week"
