Harry J. Clarke Staff & Students Celebrating Earth Day in a Big Way!
April 30, 2010
Thursday, April 22nd marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. In celebration of Earth Day, the EarthCARE team under the direction of teacher, Kate-Anne Leslie, along with teacher, Christian Derasp’s class, have planned various events that will take place on this day. On Earth Day, students from 7/8D and members of the Earth CARE team, will be visiting each classroom to present information surrounding the art of composting. Along with their presentation, they will provide each class with a new composting bin, a laminated list of compostable items, and rubber gloves. Each class is asked to assign two student-helpers as classroom compost monitors. The compost monitors will then be asked to empty the compost bins every day using the rubber gloves provided.
On April 22nd, the Earth CARE team and the students of 7/8D plan to build compost bins for the yard. Everyone has been asked to promote composting and recycling within the school. Any staff member who feels like ‘bumping it up’, has been asked to consult with the EarthCARE team to provide the classes with other ways to minimize the amount of garbage within their classroom. This should significantly decrease the amount of waste here at HJC.
The students of 7/8D will also help train the assigned compost monitors to ensure that all classes are successful. Classes in the primary division, have the opportunity to partner with the students of 7/8D and the Earth CARE team, if assistance if needed.
A special thank you has been extended by both Ms. Leslie and Mr. Derasp to all staff for their ongoing support as everyone continues to make HJC an environmentally- friendly place.
Take a bow HJC!
