Herman Staff and Students Celebrate Arbor Week!

May 29, 2011

Duane Unger, Vince Passaretti and Clay Ives, forestry professionals from Hydro One presented students at Herman Public School with trees for home and trees for their schoolyard during Arbor Week!

Much needed information was shared with the students. Mr. Ives, a former Herman student asked, "Why are trees important?" One student responded, "They help us breathe". Other answers such as 'they are good for our eco system and they are a habitat for wildlife' were given by students. Mr. Ives added that trees also prevent soil erosion; filter water that enters our streams and rivers; reduce noise pollution; and they clean impurities out of the air and give us oxygen.

The students learned about the role of trees in the environment and the role of Hydro One in forestry. Not only do the professionals at Hydro One operate and maintain power lines, they also trim trees for both safety and the health of the trees.

Each student was given a pine seedling to plant at home and a donation of two beautiful crimson maples were planted on the schoolyard.

Take a bow Herman! What a great way to celebrate Arbor Week!
