Hillcrest School, A Team of Strong Staff and Students!

July 8, 2006

Hillcrest School had three goals to achieve this school year. First, they wanted to reduce the amount of garbage; secondly, they wanted everyone involved in more 'Litterless Lunches' and thirdly, they wanted a reduction in paper use in every classroom.

With the dedication of a strong staff, and students they were "very successful" according to their EarthCARE Coordinator, Val Erskine. The commitment from the School's Office Administrator, Nan Donaldson and Custodian, Roger Boomhauer added to the achievement of their three goals. Coordinator Erskine said that "it was definitely a whole school effort and we supported each other".

Weekly messages were delivered to the students; an incentive programme with a monthly trophy; the weighing and tallying of garbage; and collecting data regarding the paper consumption were activities that were aimed at the achievement of the three goals.

This busy school is looking ahead to next year already and planning to add the goal of composting. Erskine said "It could really make a big difference next year". She hopes the strong team of Grade 4 and 5 students will continue with their roles of educating and encouraging next year "making the EarthCARE project bigger and better".
