This page is intended to help participating schools interpret
their EarthCARE audit report. To help you in this process, please
see our sample audit report.
Please note the following:
1. The EC Team score is out of a total of 20 and was based
on the team membership, the training sessions attended, and
the activities reported. A higher score is better in this category.
Note: HPEDSB schools will receive a Team score following
the Spring 2006 Audit.
Your school score is given first followed by the mean (average)
score for the schools in your panel (elementary or secondary)
and the maximum and minimum scores for the panel.
2. The three theme scores are provided in the second section: Waste and Water
on the left-hand side; Energy on the right-hand side. As above,
both school scores and panel scores are provided. For all three
themes, lower scores are better scores.
3. The Waste score has 3 components:
The percentage of rooms reported with garbage contaminating the recycling;
The percentage of rooms reported with recycled materials in the garbage containers;
The number of rooms reported that had no recycling bin
4. The Water score has 2 components:
The percentage of leaky taps reported;
The percentage of leaky toilets reported.
5. The Energy score has 4 components:
The percentage of lights left on when they were not needed;
The percentage of computers on when they were not being used;
The percentage of rooms reported in which the air vents were blocked by obstacles placed over or in front of them;
The percentage of rooms reported with temperatures set too high or too low.
Results were sent to you for your school only, with overall statistics for the board. Please use the information in your report to develop EarthCARE plans for this year. This is not a competition among schools.
Your EarthCARE Project Coordinator, Veronica Ford, is available
to assist you in planning activities to improve scores in any
of the areas. Let us know if we can help.
What should you do with this audit report?
The goal is to capture the dollars spent on wasted energy through improved
occupant behaviours and convert this money to value for your schools.
Talk to your staff and students about the results and the
goal for EarthCARE. Tell them there is a direct benefit to
the schools that participate in EarthCARE as the wasted energy
costs. Principals, staff and students have several ideas about
what they would do with some "environmental cash".
Set targets for LOCO and build them into your School Improvement
Plan.
To be eligible for the gain sharing, schools must meet
simple criteria including an active EarthCARE team, attendance
at all training sessions, completion and submission of audit
reports, and a focus on LOCO. Eligibility does NOT depend
on reporting 'good' audit scores. We are interested in determining
the genuine progress being made through the audit and not
a 'look good' score.
