Setting Goals and Achieving Them at Kente Public!
June 26, 2008
The staff and students of Kente Public School in Ameliasburgh are taking two bold steps in an effort to conserve energy and reduce waste.
First, as of June 2008, Kente has started a Pack It In/Pack It Out initiative whereby all of the students and staff will take home their waste. This will include packaging from purchased items from the school store such as milk cartons.
Second, Kente has begun to compost, allowing students to dispose of food waste such as apple cores and banana peels. According to EarthCARE coordinator, Catherine Blakely, "We are hoping to achieve several goals in the process:
- Create a better awareness of what waste we create and where it ends up
(Waste, of course, goes hand in hand with consumerism which in turn fuels industries and ways of life that are tied to global warming. Any amount of awareness is a good thing and can only develop further if encouraged.)
- Develop environmental stewardship by taking responsibility for the waste we create
- Engage in common activity for all students and staff which fosters teamwork and community building
- Reduce our tipping fees with savings returned to the school to further promote environmental initiatives such as purchasing more books and resources for the new EarthCARE section in the library
- Reduce the time spent sorting recycling and have more time to take part in
a wide variety of environmental activities ( i.e. learning about the efforts
of Simon Jackson and his efforts to save the Kermode bear in British Columbia
