Moira "Volts" Into Action

March 17, 2009

Lead by their enthusiastic EarthCARE team, Moira Secondary School ran their second annual "Voltathon" from January 7th to January 16th, 2009. This is a highly spirited, highly competitive event in which staff and students bring in their used batteries to be properly disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

EarthCARE members planned the event just after the holidays, assuming families would be happy for a place to get rid of their dead batteries. They were right! Batteries flooded homeroom classes. The winning class, Mrs. Fisher's grade 9 geography, tipped the voltmeter with 910 volts. This was truly an energetic win, considering most of their batteries were 1.5 volts.

Not only is this event charged with fun, it raises environmental awareness and provides an easy way for people to take action. "By participating in the Voltathon, people realize the positive alternative to throwing batteries into the trash", said Kristen D., one of the lead organizers of the event.
