Earthstock Rocks Moira!
May 4, 2009
Last week marked the first annual Earthstock event at Moira Secondary School. More than just the traditional one-day Earthday celebration, the week-long Earthstock represents the flagship event for Moira's dedicated EarthCARE task force. The event was composed of daily earth friendly initiatives designed to promote a greener attitude at Moira while thoroughly entertaining the school population.

The week began with an artistic competition between homerooms in which sculptures were constructed from a week's worth of Moira's recyclables. The winning entry was a 6-foot scale model of Noah's Ark with other notable entries including a Trojan warrior and an origami tree. Classes were also invited to participate in a school wide Trash Bash in which over 200 lbs of garbage were collected from Moira grounds. The success of the Trash Bash, which took place on a beautiful Earth Day, prompted many students to ask "why don't we do this more often?".
Other events included a "Bring Your Own Bottle For Tang" day (it's what the astronauts drink!) to promote reusable containers. Students even got the chance to win great EarthCARE swag in a school wide "Blue Bin Pitch-In to Win" game. The festivities even extend beyond the designated Earthstock week with a tasty buy-in "Low Impact Lunch" set to happen in the coming days.
Finally the stunning, publicly displayed entries of Earthstock's Environmental Photo and Video Contest ensure that a green message will remain in Moira's hallways for months to come.
Upon the conclusion of Earthstock week both organizers and participants alike were delighted with the event's resounding success. When the Earthstock idea was initially discussed there were several main goals in mind including both entertainment and environmental responsibility. Above all head organizers and senior students Connor Emdin and Jordan Cheyne "wanted to leave a green legacy at Moira". With the help of head teacher adviser Ms. Miller and the rest of the EarthCARE Crew the Earthstock idea became reality. If the overwhelming positive reaction at Moira is any indication the proud Trojan Legacy is now a little greener.
