Prince Charles Belleville Gardening

June 22, 2010

Under the tutelage of Nancy Anderson students from PCB are hard at it gardening for the 3rd year in a row. Potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, onions, broccoli and flowers such as daffodils and tulips in spring and sunflowers in the fall are among the many plantings the students have worked hard to cultivate. During the fall an assembly is held where there is a reading of the book ‘Stone Soup’ and students partake of a soup made from their harvest that year.

The Prince Charles School Council donated $500. for start up costs to offset the purchase of bulbs, seeds, garden tools, hoses and a wheelbarrow.

Students participate each recess on a voluntary basis to assist with planting, weeding and harvesting. It is a very inclusive activity with students from all grades (K-5) taking part. Principal Carleton-Maines says that the gardening is a wonderful new experience for most of the students and they find out where food comes from and enjoy the nurturing activity of growing their own food.

The Character Attributes that Hastings and Prince Edward District Schools is committed to support through the System plan are a valued part of the activity. Caring, Cooperation, Respect, and Responsibility are certainly a high focus.

Grade 4 student Kai said “When I started doing this I thought it was going to be hard and all sweat and work but its really a lot of fun!”

Happy gardening Prince Charles students and staff!
