Teacher E. Sills and Principal M. Wagner are very proud of
the successes at Sir John A. Macdonald School. They predict an even
stronger focus on the environment this school year.
Sir John A. Macdonald Students Make Good on Their Promises...
November 13, 2006
In this urban JK-Gr. 6 School, a tree decorated the front foyer in the school
year 2005-2006. On this tree, students hung their promises for the environment
on individual leaves. Eunice, a grade 2 student promised 'to pick up garbage
around her.' Madison promised 'to write a letter
to Tim Horton's asking them to make their cups recyclable.' Zachary in
grade 4, promised to 'spend more time outside rather than inside playing video
games.'
That activity was just one of the many activities performed by the students and
staff during their very successful first year of involvement in the EarthCARE
initiative. Others included a Trash Bash, an emphasis on litterless lunches,
flower and seed planting, and a reduction in
'Tipping costs'. The teachers at SJA worked hard at making the links to curriculum.
In science, the students made paper; in writing, environmental stories were written
and in art, posters were designed.
Coordinator Sills said that the programme was resounding success because of the strong participation and commitment of not only staff and students but also community volunteers like Mr. Shorey. She suggested that this year the initiative should show even better results.
Thank you staff, students and community volunteers at SJA. You continue to make a difference!
