Trees are 'IN' at Sophiasburgh Central School
May 22, 2009
On May 4, 2009, Grade 4/5 students at Sophiasburgh Central School were ready with shovels in hand as they eagerly awaited their bundle of trees. 50 jack pine and 50 white pine seedlings found a new home in what was once pasture land at the back of the school. EarthCare co-ordinator and grade 4/5 teacher Mr. Marc Vermander stated, "The children were really excited about this opportunity and had many questions as to seedling survival and growth rates.
White pine was chosen for the drier upland portion of the field, while jack pine was chosen because of its resiliency and rapid growth rate. Virginia juniper has already begun to re-establish in lower wet parts of the terrain. Service berry, nannyberry, and elderberry shrubs will be added later this week. Hopefully there will eventually be an on-site nature study area for the students in the not too distant future. Many said they would be coming back long after they have left SCS to visit the forest that is to come."
Well done, Sophiasburgh Central!
