Under the direction of Coordinators, Anne-Marie Vander Eynden and Susan Clarke
Grade 5 students, Darien, Angela, and Selena say their EarthCARE team has
accomplished much this year. Selena said, "that the school has done a lot
better since they started the EarthCARE project". Angela added that "The students
are a lot more responsible about putting their garbage and recyclables in the
proper containers".
Their recent Contest with the theme: "What can you do to help?" was a great success and overall the response was more than they expected. Students were asked to create a poster, a poem or a rap song to encourage environmental awareness. Prizes were awarded for the best results.
The Grade 5 students have also been rating rooms and awarding Gold stars to classrooms
which have all four areas appropriately 'taken care of': Lights, Computers,
Garbage and Recycling. Darien said: "At first, not a lot of the students wanted
reminders, although they needed them. They are now pretty much doing everything
on their own. And some of the teachers and students are concerned when they
do not receive a gold star."
The EarthCARE team collected the data and announced the winning classes. Not
surprising, the winners were: the Library (the responsibility of the EarthCARE
team), Mrs. Clarke's room and Mrs. Vanden Eyden's room. Way to go Stirling Jr.!
