Queen Victoria Public School Chose to be "Stream Keepers"

On October 28th and 29th, the students and staff of Queen Victoria Public School and many volunteers painted fish to display on their school yard fence. The fish represent the 'dream' of purer rivers, streams and creeks.
The purpose of the painting project is to enhance the communities' awareness of what they can do with respect to clean water.
Maya Navrot, Conservation Education Coordinator with the Quinte Conservation spoke to each group of students prior to the painting activity. She questioned the students on their knowledge regarding clean water practices. She asked them if they knew that the personnel from Quinte Conservation count fish and net bugs in order to test the health of a stream. Maya showed the
students a 'pop-out' map of the watershed area. Using snapping fingers, tapping and clapping hands, she had the students create a storm to enhance their knowledge of the water cycle. She demonstrated how many chemicals pollute our water and what we can do to keep our water clean.
The activity culminated with a hanging of the fish on the schoolyard fence. The community and all who pass by can then be made aware of the schools’ efforts in keeping Quintes’ waters cleaner…
