Students from Susanna Moodie Public School Clean Up Park to Show Veterans Their Sacrifices Are Appreciated!

November 26, 2007

Approximately 12 students from Susanna Moodie Public School visited Memorial Park in Belleville to rake and bag leaves and collect garbage at the site in preparation for the Sunday, November 11th Remembrance Day Service. Helping the students out were a number of Belleville RONA employees who had volunteered to do some raking themselves.

Beth Power, the EarthCARE coordinator at Susanna Moodie said it was the students who suggested cleaning the park prior to Sunday's ceremony. The students were excited to know they could do something in the community to show their appreciation for what those men and women did for us, she said.

"I was amazed at what they came up with," she said. "We clean up around the school yard but they've been looking for ways to get out in the community like this."

Power said she is "very proud" of the students. Many of the children in the school have had family members serve in war-time and being able to do their own part to help with Sunday's ceremony means a lot to them. One student, Steven said that his family was in the war and it had given us all much reason to live. He continued with "My great uncle served in the war so this is very dear to my heart."

Thank you to both student and adult helpers for preparing the park for this special service.
