EarthCARE Activities at Trenton High School

April 26, 2010

Trenton High School students under the direction of EarthCARE rep, Jeff McDougal have had a busy first semester and many plans for an even busier second semester...

As in the past, the activities for EarthCARE were run by the Grade 9 Geography students in the first semester. During this semester students constructed four different bulletin boards that promoted Environmental initiatives related to Land, Water, Home and Work. Students also toured a "green roof" on a field trip to Toronto.

During the second semester, EarthCARE initiatives are run by the Outer Limits class. This four-credit Outdoor Education/Environmental Resource Management class will be completing several initiatives during the spring. In addition to their commitment to personal environmental stewardship the students will be planting 30,000 trees in Hastings County. This will be done during the week of April 26th - 30th. In the past 12 years, students from Outer Limits have planted over 200,000 trees in our area.

In addition to the tree planting initiatives, Outer Limits students will be key participants in the Lower Trent Conservation Water Festival for the second year. This year the event will take place over two days (May 26, 27) at Centennial Park in Trenton. Over the course of these two days the students will inform elementary students about the importance of water and different ways to conserve and protect water.

Earth Day plans are still being made, however, staff and students will continue with the theme of the past by avoiding the "clean up" routine and practice the "celebration" routine. Over the years it has become a strong focus to look after the outdoor environment all year not just on one day and thus we choose to celebrate the outdoors on the day that honours the Earth.

Take a bow, Trenton High for continuing to ‘make a difference’!
