Trenton High School Students Hard at Work Saving the Environment!
May 1, 2010
The Outer Limits class of 32 students from Trenton High School has been enduring the weather changes this week to plant trees in various spots about the county. A Partnership with the Hastings Stewardship Council and the students and staff at Trenton High has made this project a success for the past 14 years. On Monday, the students planted white spruce and red pine in Eldorado; Tuesday they planted in Thomasburg; Wednesday in Stocco and Thursday in Wooler.
The survival rate of the plantings is extremely good. For example, a planting of 4000 trees behind Loyalist one year resulted in only a 5% loss when replanting was done last year.
Grade 11 student, Cameron says he likes “helping the environment .” He also stated that it was great to “get off their bikes and help others this week”.
The class has been very busy this year. The goal according to teacher and EarthCARE rep Jeff McDougal is to spend 95% of the class time out of doors. The students have been involved in cycling, winter camping, First Aid Training, working on the Mayhew Creek rehabilitation in Trenton, leaf raking in a local cemetery and many more projects. According to Student Raven, she has learned “a lot of new things; not text book stuff”.
Student Corey says that “It’s a great course and although it is a lot of work, it is worth it”. Jordan, another Grade 11 student says “it’s a lot of fun, good for the environment,” and that the teacher is great!”
Take a bow, Mr. McDougal and students of Trenton High!
