EarthCARE, An Environmental Education Partnership ™

Tweed-Hungerford Staff and Students Care

May 1, 2010

With teacher rep Lindsay Macdonald leading her class of grade 7/8 students, EarthCARE has taken on new life at Tweed-Hungerford Elementary School. The grade 7/8 students recently completed their Ecological Footprints as part of a Science Unit. They tied together Heat & Water Systems with Global Warming & Climate Change. Students were asked to complete their footprint and look at the effects they were having on the environment. Then they were asked to think about what message they could send out to people to make them aware of their footprint and how to change it. That message was posted on the footprint.

Many students and their parents have commented that they trying to think about using less and recycling more. They are now more aware and looking for other aspects that impact the environment.

During Earth Week many activities including a trivia contest, a trash bash, and litterless lunches are planned. A huge focus for the school year has been water awareness. Fundraising to purchase a well in Africa through the sale of reusable school-branded water bottles has been a resounding success!

Take a bow, Tweed-Hungerford staff and students – making a difference, one ecological footprint at a time!
