Tyendinaga Students and Staff are Environmentally Aware!
July 12, 2006
Tyendinaga Public School, with its 395 students and 20 staff members, is working
hard to deliver a strong message regarding environmental awareness. It's all
about educating and encouraging.
According to Team Coordinator Lisa Williams, they have "a very active recycling
programme". Each classroom has been supplied with 3 blue boxes and a white
bin, which are labeled. Sorting happens on the spot in the classrooms. Custodian,
Brian Fraser, only collects 2 bags of garbage a day and he finds there is
less spillage and less work for him during the recycling process due to the
strong commitment of the staff and students.
Earth Day was celebrated under the leadership of the Student Leadership Council. They arranged a poetry writing contest and a bulletin board competition. Pitch In, Canada provided the school with garbage bags and each class was given the opportunity to clean up a portion of their
play yard.
This active school has also been involved in 2 Collection programmes, empty ink cartridges and old cell phones, which provided the school with a return of $1200.00 last year.
Together you are making a difference, Tyendinaga!
