Student Leaders inspire others to "Be the Change"!
December 23, 2009
During the Youth Forum on November 26th held at the Education Centre in Belleville, student leaders were asked to look at Global Change in one of the seminars led by two students from
Centre Hastings Secondary School. Madison and Tess delivered a strong message to their fellow students from all of the Secondary schools in HPEDSB. They asked everyone to be
accountable for the environment and urged each person to act. They provided much information on actions that might make a difference. In future they encouraged everyone to ask “How am I helping the world if I do this?” Madison and Tess stressed the idea of being a critical consumer. One activity that seemed to be enjoyed by all was a group activity where the students
were asked to develop a creative marketing strategy to reuse a recycled container. Much laughter and applause accompanied this activity as students stretched their creativity in humorous ways. Many prizes printed with the EarthCARE logo were given in each of the three seminars.
The message delivered by Madison and Tess was punctuated by the presentation of Environmentalist Lisa Glithero. Her multimedia presentation included personal stories, photographs and perspectives of transformative learning experiences designed to show students how their choices, actions, and vision can lead to positive school, community and global change. She
suggested that the youth of today are not the leaders of tomorrow but the leaders of today because they are at the forefront of change. She urged students to question, take a stand, speak out and act out.
I'm sure that all of the student leaders left the Youth Forum feeling empowered with the belief that 'together they could make a difference'.
