Climate Change Puts Cultures Under Siege!
December 19, 2006
On Thursday, November 16th, the Junior and Intermediate students of Marmora Sr. School attended an EarthCARE assembly. Information regarding climate changes and the sense of urgency this issue brings to all of us was shared during each of the half hour sessions. Pictures of the
Canadian Arctic and the Pacific Islands demonstrated both the beauty of both these environments along with the dramatic effects a changing climate brings to both cultures. In the Arctic, glaciers are melting and small low-lying islands are flooded. Rising seas and storm surges are sinking entire islands and drowning harbours and airports in the South Pacific Islands.
Students were challenged by EarthCARE coordinator, Veronica Ford with the question,
"But how can you make a difference?" Improved recycling became the focus. Students
were reminded to Recycle, Reuse and Reduce. Darleen Wolters-Sword, HPEDSB's
environmental technologist engaged the students in an exercise geared to classify
garbage and recycling materials.
Students Carly, Randy and Samantha, who are part of the EarthCARE team reported
that "Marmora Sr. did a good job last year" but "they are planning on helping
the Earth even more this year".
We know you can make a difference, Marmora Sr.
