January 18, 2010 - In 2008-2009, EarthCARE saved the Ottawa-Carleton and Hastings/Prince Edward boards over $2 million and reduced CO2 emissions by over 19 tonnes. Read the details in the OCDSB (pdf) and the HPEDSB (pdf) final reports.

December 10, 2009 - The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board Student Senate Youth Forum kick-starts a year of change.

November 27, 2009 - The 2008/2009 audit reports are in! Key results of the EarthCARE program in the HPEDSB include over $200,000 in savings from LOCO alone and an estimated 2 ton reduction in CO2 emissions; this is all thanks to a 100% participation rate! May 12, 2009 - An update to the story of Mr. Foster's Grade 4 Class at at Harry J. Clarke P.S. sending a letter to McDonald's Restaurants of Canada, check out the very detailed response they received from McDonald's (PDF).

April 16, 2009 - For students and staff at Moira Secondary School, Earth Day has become Earthstock, a week-long affair composed of daily Earth friendly initiatives designed to promote a greener attitude at Moira while thoroughly entertaining the school population. Earthstock is the flagship event for Moira's dedicated EarthCARE task force - congratulations to all who took part!

April 16, 2009 - Read the letter that a group of students in Mr. Foster's Grade 4 Class at Harry J. Clarke P.S. prepared and sent to McDonald's Restaurants of Canada in the hopes that they could inspire the chain to deepen their commitment to the environment.

April 16, 2009 - Under the direction of Betty Kuhn, Breadner's PLAN (People Learning About Nature) Club has been very busy once again this year. Two of the PLAN Club's largest initiatives for 2008/2009 were the Think Recycle program and the Green Leaf campaign.

April 6, 2009 - Staff and students of the HPEDSB 'vote for Earth' as they switch off their lights and participate in this year's Earth Hour.

March 17, 2009 - Moira Secondary School's second annual "Voltathon": a spirited and competitive event in which staff and students bring in their used batteries to be properly disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

March 6, 2009 - Earth Hour in Canada - Turn off your lights on Saturday March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm. Millions of Canadians will turn off their lights on March 28th for Earth Hour in support of action on climate change. Lots of information is available on their site, but be sure to check out the toolkits and downloadable materials page for tips to help you get started.

January 20, 2009 - Park Dale EarthCARE team leader, Principal Heather Rutherford has 3 main goals this year: promoting 'walking to school', litterless lunches, and reminding others that Park Dale is an environmentally conscious school.

January 19, 2009 - Thanks to strong student, teacher and custodial commitment and enthusiasm, everyone is catching on to the EarthCARE message at Queen Elizabeth School (Trenton).

January 19, 2009 - Using creative ways to inspire energy conservation and celebrate their accomplishments, Kente School students and staff are helping to make a difference.

November 18, 2008 - The students and staff of Queen Victoria Public School get creative to demonstrate their commitment to clean water.

November 17, 2008 - A PDF of the EarthCARE quiz (and its answers) that was distributed at the fall OCDSB in-service has been posted to the Lessons, Activities and Handouts page. Also, the conservation and waste reduction websites mentioned at the fall in-service have been added to the Website Resources page. Thank you to all who were involved in compiling this information.

November 10, 2008 - The grade 7/8 French immersion class at Harry J. Clarke Public School enter the Canadian Tire eGreen School Contest with a letter summarizing their commitment to the environment.

June 26, 2008 - Two bold steps to conserve energy and reduce waste from the students of Kente Public School in Ameliasburgh.

June 23, 2008 - Fiona, from Pinecrest Memorial Elementary School's grade 6 class, brings us a video presentation on how planting a school garden is a great way to beautify the school and learn about the environment.

June 22, 2008 - Grade 4 student, Brock from Pinecrest Memorial has produced an outstanding video production encouraging us to stop polluting - watch Brock's video now.

June 18, 2008 - The EarthCARE team at Pinecrest Elementary is reducing waste in their school by improving recycling and initiating composting programs.

June 16, 2008 - Ms. MacInnis' students at Hillcrest Public School celebrate Earth Day by declaring their commitment to our planet.

November 14 2007 - The EarthCARE poster contest is underway. Posters will be presented as a display in the boardroom and at our spring event. The divisional winners will be printed for all of our schools to use in support of EarthCARE this year. Deadline for entries in November 30.

October 22 2007 - EarthCARE Design Team and curriculum supporter of the Frink Centre encouraged the Design Team to help the already "green" Frink Centre carry our message further.

October 8 2007 - EarthCARE contributes to an expected $1.6 million savings in the HPEDSB.

June 27 2007 - Thank you to everyone who attended "Chillin' with the Planet, Caring for Our Community". Hosted by Canadian author and photographer, Bruce Kirkby, the event was held in recognition of the HPEDSB's contribution to environmental awareness and conservation through the EarthCARE program. May 16 2007 - The spring EarthCARE Training was held at the Board office this year, it was a tremendous success - thank you to all who participated, We are all about improving and making a difference!

May 16 2007 - Under the direction of EarthCARE coordinator, Veronica Ford and Vice-Principal, Heather McMaster, the team of dedicated Junior and Intermediate students at Queen Elizabeth School worked hard to compile the data necessary for the Spring EarthCARE audit.

May 16 2007 - Recently, the annual Quinte Waste Solutions calendar was delivered to the residents of the Quinte area. This valuable resource offers a variety of waste reduction tips including, using reuseable cloth bags, making litterless lunches, and participating in secondhand sports swaps.

April 17 2007 - Although Earth Day falls on a Sunday this year, many of the schools in Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board are planning activities on alternate days to remind everyone that we need to do our part. See what some of these schools have planned.

March 17 2007 - "Walden: The Ballad of Thoreau" is a theatrical play about the last two days Henry David Thoreau spent in his cabin at Walden Pond. This two-act, one-set, four-character play is designed for use by high schools and colleges. The script and play materials plus a customized lesson plan are available FREE to schools in the USA and Canada. Learn more in this PDF summary.

February 28 2007 - Led by teacher, Carrie Szuks, the 9 student EarthCARE Ambassadors at Stirling Primary and Junior are working hard to encourage others to join in the challenge for a better environment.

January 8 2007 - 52 Lead Hands in the Hastings & Prince Edward District School Board received training in leadership skills and working with people on December 5th and 6th.

December 19 2006 - Students at Belleville, Ontario's Prince of Wales Public School are challenged to make a difference.

July 12 2006 - Tyendinaga Public School, with its 395 students and 20 staff members, is working hard to deliver a strong message regarding environmental awareness.

July 11 2006 - An update from Breadner Elementary School on how they have put to good use funding provided for them through the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds Grant.

July 10 2006 - Miss Silver's Grade 5 class at College St. School present a musical version of the Three R's in an Arts Assembly and deliver a great message to the whole school.

July 9 2006 - Litterless Lunches and Lights Out Monitors are among the successful EarthCARE initiatives that students and teachers at Stirling Primary School undertook this year. All those involved need to 'take a bow' for all their hard work - it's paying off!

July 9 2006 - By meeting twice a month, EarthCARE Coordinator, Jodi Archibald's Grade 7 and 8 Green Team have helped S.H. Connor School (K-Gr. 3) and its partner school Tweed-Hungerford (Gr. 4-8) reduce, reuse and recycle.

July 8 2006 - Student Council and EarthCARE Coordinator, Ian Fox, at Pinecrest Memorial Elementary School in Bloomfield, Ontario, have been working hard on two worthy goals.

July 8 2006 - Under the direction of EarthCARE Coordinator, Amira Miller, South Marysburgh Central School (K- 3) and Athol Central School (grade 4-8), have had an outstanding year participating in the EarthCARE program. Not only are students working to reduce waste and promote school-wide recycling, they're applying skills learned in the classroom to quantify the results of their efforts.

July 8 2006 - V.P. Carswell School's student run EarthCARE recycling program creates awareness and outstanding results.

July 8 2006 - Hillcrest School had three goals to achieve this school year. First, they wanted to reduce the amount of garbage; secondly, they wanted everyone involved in more 'Litterless Lunches' and thirdly, they wanted a reduction in paper use in every classroom.

June 15 2006 - Mr. James' Green Team has been a very positive and active group at North Trenton Public School.

June 15 2006 - Under the direction of Coordinators, Anne-Marie Vander Eynden and Susan Clarke, Stirling Junior School Grade 5 students, Darien, Angela, and Selena say their EarthCARE team has accomplished much this year.

June 9 2006 - Under the direction of Team Coordinator, Chris Brady, and Vice Principal Susan Carleton-Maines, the Solid Waste Assessment Team (S.W.A.T.) at Foxboro Public School is busy making presentations, posting signs and providing reminders to everyone about EarthCARE's recycling message.

February 24 2006 - Custodians at HPE's CUPE PD day attended a workshop on customer service and building effective school teams full of laughs, lessons, and learning. The workshop was part of their EarthCARE Building Operator Training program.

November 4 2005 - "The Recycling Maniacs," a recycling themed play written by Meadowlands PS (OCDSB) teacher, Anne Sproule, has been added to the Lessons and Activities section. This play is an excellent teaching resource and is available for download as a PDF of as a Word file.
