April 22nd Earth Day Celebrations
April 17, 2007
Although Earth Day falls on a Sunday this year, many of the schools in Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board are planning activities on alternate days to remind everyone that we need to do our part.
At Stirling Sr. Public School, two of the classes (one grade 8 and one grade 7) under the direction of EarthCARE leader, Mr. Wolff, will participate in a local community clean-up, called "trash -bash" for the afternoon on April 20th. This was organized by the community in
Stirling with a supply of gloves and garbage bags to be donated. The Intermediate students will be assigned to various areas of the community, both streets and public areas to clean up. The student participants will be rewarded with a BBQ following the clean up.
Ms. Gray, EarthCARE teacher lead at Queen Elizabeth School Belleville, with the
help of the Student Council and the HASC (Healthy Active School Community)
committee are planning a few activities to celebrate Earth Day at throughout
the week of April 23. These activities include: composting in all the rooms,
a Litterless Lunch Day (their first attempt), a Paperless Lesson Day, and a
Turn off the Lights and Save Energy Day.
To focus on Earth Day this year, Tyendinaga Public School staff and students
are having a "Waste Free Lunch Week" for
the entire week next week of April16-20, as they have for the past several years.
A Parent Letter with some great tips was sent home. The classes will be competing
to see which has the smallest volume of garbage. The rooms will be checked "randomly" on
one unannounced day next week by an EarthCare team. Also, the last week of April,
all classes will be participating in Pitch-in Canada Week, by cleaning up the
garbage and recyclables from the yard. Incentives will be awarded to the class
that brings in the most.
Kente Public School, under the leadership of Mrs. C. Blakely, has invited Marvin
Tucker from Quinte Waste Solutions to come to their school to give a talk/slide
show presentation on Friday, April 20th. They are also planning to hold a
contest for students to make trophies out of reusuable "stuff" that would either
end up in the garbage or in the recyclying. These trophies will then be used
for prizes for other environmental contests throughout the rest of the school
year.
Sir Mackenzie Bowell Elementary School staff and students will be focussing their attention on student and parent awareness regarding the importance of bringing "Litterless / Waste Free" lunches to school. They have designated April 16th - 20th as EarthCARE week at SMB. Under
the leadership of Principal Delarge, who is also their EarthCARE leader, the school has registered for the Ontario Waste Free Lunch Challenge. The staff and students will also be holding yard clean-up activities with all classes participating over the course of the week. This
exciting and busy week will conclude with selected student leaders attending the Bruce Kirkby event at Trenton High School.
Great work, Hastings and Prince Edward District Schools!
