The FROGGs at Colonel By

December 9, 2008

At Colonel By Secondary School we have a student group called FROGG (Friends Reaching Out for Greener Growth). The picture on the right is of an activity we held of students cleaning up the river by our school during the weekend. Every month our club creates a bulletin board with different topics to create awareness in our school about the environment. This previous month our bulletin board talked about what students can recycle, in hopes that the students at Colonel By will not just mindlessly throw recyclable material in the trash.

Throughout the school year we hope to contribute to creating a greener school by running a festive light exchange where students can bring in two strands of incandescent lights and we will give them a strand of LED lights. We also created our club t-shirts by silk screening our logo on old t-shirts flipped inside out. Annually our club encourages students to bring litter-less lunches to school to reduce the amount of garbage our school creates. We do this by giving out prizes such as reusable travel mugs and such to students who bring litterless lunches to school. Our club also plans to run a battery and ink cartridge drive so these can be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. This year we are also planning on selling aluminum travel mugs so people won't create more garbage using paper cups. We are also trying to set up the purchasing of agenda's made out of recycled paper for the following school year.
