Elizabeth Wyn Wood Door Decorating Contest

February 17, 2006 | By Andrew Duff

Here at Elizabeth Wyn Wood, our staff and students are dedicated to improving the way our school impacts the environment. Our hardworking members of EarthCARE are continuously finding new and more efficient ways to reduce waste and improve on energy consumption.

In December 2005, Elizabeth Wyn Wood challenged its students with the door decorating contest. The idea was to festively decorate your classroom door using only recycled or re-used products. The results were amazing. Students found clever ways to use items such as juice boxes, pop cans, and even banana peels to create festive door decorations. The students were judged on their use of recycled or re-used products, whether or not there was a visible theme, the incorporation of other religions, and the level of participation. The winners of the contest were the students of Chris Clarke's class who were treated to a pizza lunch.

Having students participate in such activities encourages them to be more conscious about the environment. Giving students incentives like a pizza lunch motivates them to actively participate in our effort to improve the environment.
