FROGGs Busy at Colonel By

December 26, 2007

Friends Reaching Out for Greener Growth, a group of twenty or more keen students, meet every two weeks during their lunch hour with EarthCARE Team Leader Reuben Cooke.

They have had a busy first term which included: designing a logo and motto which they silk screened onto t-shirts students brought from home, and is being printed on stainless steel mugs that will be sold to students and staff.

They held an eco-friendly bake sale during parent-teacher interview and information evenings and sold organic, free-trade coffee in reusable mugs brought from home. Newsletters reminded parents to 'lug-a-mug'. Proceeds from the bake sale will be used to purchase mugs for the school to be used at future gatherings of parents, students, and staff to avoid use of Styrofoam, which cannot be recycled.

A rethink garbage campaign was the kick off to litterless lunch week. The FROGGERs collected all the garbage and recycling boxes in the school, displayed them in the atrium and then sorted the garbage to demonstrate to fellow students the number of items incorrectly placed in garbage and recycling boxes. The goal is to heighten awareness, reduce the amount of garbage going to the landfill and show how little effort it takes to create a greener earth. They also purchased paper plates for the cafeteria to replace the use of Styrofoam ones, for the duration of the litterless lunch week.

Plans are underway for a movie night, outdoor initiatives, Earth Week events, and increasing student participation
