Mosaics at Banting – Using Recyling in Art

May 25, 2010

History of mosaics: 4000 years ago terracotta cones were pushed point-first into a background to provide decorations. By the eighth century BC, pebble pavements using different coloured stones to create patterns were used to make unstructured decoration. In the 4th century BC the Greeks raised the pebble technique to an art form with precise geometric patterns and detailed scenes of people and animals. Mosaics have been a popular and functional art form ever since.

What I did: I used recycled broken pieces of plates and cups, and assembled them onto surfaces in a pattern that I thought was cool. I glued the pieces of broken china to the surface, let it dry for 24 hours then grouted between the china pieces. This is a sample of what they look like! Pat W.
