Glebe's Weekly Recycling
December 26, 2007
Glebe's TWIGS group providing waste reduction and conservation instructions
to new students and monitoring the contents of their school's recycling bins.
Every Wednesday TWIGS members set the stage for Glebe's weekly recycling
activity: we meet to post signs indicating where to deposit "plastic and
cans", "paper and cardboard", "glass" and "garbage". After the singing of
'O Canada' and the morning announcements, all classroom teachers send
a runner down to the basement with the blue and black recycling bins. Most
of the students are experienced with the process, but TWIGS is there to
provide instructions to new students and monitor the contents of the recycling.
After most of the classes have completed their classroom recycling, TWIGS
members pick up recycling from other areas in the school, namely the first,
second and third floor hallway bins, and (yuck!!) the cafeteria. This is
our least favourite job, as TWIGS has to separate the food from the recycling
materials.
We have become quite expert in conducting Glebe's weekly recycling program, and
the process takes us now only 30 minutes to complete.
