I Can Change the World with My Own Two Hands
December 26, 2007
The BEAT (Be Environmentally Active Today) Club along with their mascot Junky
Jr. who is made from recycled garbage, sang 'With My Own Two
Hands' a song about caring for the world by Jack Johnson at the December 'Cooperation'
assembly at Jockvale ES. This is just one of their many activities in the school.
They have framed every light switch with a Junky Jr. cartoon likeness with a reminder to turn off the lights; a task they said they loved doing. And, they are busy recycling milk cartons every lunch hour. A core group of 12 students show up to wash, dry and squish cartons. Team Leader Penny Gershon-Giaccone then takes them home for recycling. To date they have saved 910 cartons from the landfill.
They have been encouraging litterless lunches and randomly reinforcing this with
prizes from the EarthCARE incentive kit. Penny says this has really done the
trick. Her BEAT Club is a keen, energetic, enthusiastic group. Wait 'till you
see the pizza box dragon sculptures!
