From Garbage Bag to Recycling Box

February 12, 2007

Parkwood Hills Public School hosted Terry and Geoff from the Sierra Club to help staff and students learn to reduce, reuse and recycle their lunch time garbage. The prime purpose of the Sierra Club is to educate the public about the environment. In a hands-on assembly, staff and students quickly saw how much unnecessary garbage was created every day at lunch.

A bag of lunch time garbage was emptied onto the gym floor during an assembly. Several students from the Garden Club helped sort the many pieces of garbage into the blue, black and green recycling boxes. Both staff and students soon became aware of the many items from milk and juice boxes to paper cups from local Coffee Shops that could easily have been place in appropriate recycling boxes. This assembly will encourage classroom discussions and school projects to assist in the 3 Rs.
