Students in Action
Grade 5 students at Stittsville P.S. separate their lunch
garbage into drainables and items that can be recycled,
composted or disposed of at home.
Teacher John Todd is very proud of his grade 5 class
Recycling at Home
Since September 2004, one of the Grade 5 classes at
Stittsville Public School has not had any metal or plastic in
their garbage or recycling bins. While eating or drinking
beside an open lunch bag, everything but "drainables" goes back
into the lunch bag to be recycled, composted or disposed of
at home.
Parents know what their children eat and how much; the students do not litter
or spread allergens on the school yard; and when it's play time
they can fully participate in active play rather than juggling
a snack.
John Todd, a teacher at Stittsville, is proud of the program and what the students have accomplished. When I met with him, in December, he showed me the garbage his class had generated for one week, just one classroom garbage can (37cm high, 34 cm top diameter and 27cm bottom diameter). That was it!! !! This is another great example of people working together to make a difference.
