Think Global Act Local at Terry Fox ES

May 2, 2007

The students at Terry Fox, under the direction of Marjorie Whittingham, have been diligently focusing on the 3 "Rs" in the EarthCARE program. The EarthCARE Club has been meeting once a week during the winter months to plan activities for the student body about saving the environment.

Two major projects have taken place. "Think Global, Act Local", allowed students to display ideas on paper leaves about how to save the Earth. These leaves were then placed on a 'tree' located on the bulletin board in the front foyer. Students are encouraged to walk by and choose one leaf and then try to act on that idea for tthat day. Grade 7 students also wrote articles on global warming and these were also posted on the bullentin board. One of the themes for "Think Global, Act Local" is "Every person can make a difference". Try to do your part to save the earth.

Their second major project was a Battery Drive. So far the students have collected over 2000 batteries. Students were anxious to collect batteries when they learned that batteries are responsible for 70% of the heavy metals found in land fills.

As well, each day a member of the EarthCARE Club participates in the morning announcements by sharing facts and ideas about the environment. The students are certainly heavily involved with EarthCARE at Terry Fox.

Way to make a difference!
