Cake Raffle at Glebe Collegiate Institute
By Ozlem, Grade 12, May 4, 2009
On Thursday February 12th, TWIGS held a cake raffle to raise money to match the grant we received from the School Greening Partnership Program. The cake raffle turned out to be a huge success because TWIGS members, along with students and staff of Glebe Collegiate became very involved in it.
Because the raffle was held just before the week-end of Valentine’s Day, TWIGS members opted to bake cakes with a Valentine theme. We ended up with 14 pink-iced, heart-decorated, chocolate-drizzled cakes to dazzle anyone who was in a Valentine’s Day mood. It was a perfect time for anyone, who hadn’t purchased a gift for their loved one, to buy a raffle ticket and win a cake.
Cakes were brought into the school in the early morning and displayed on 3 long tables in the front foyer. The bakers then carried their own cakes with them to morning period classes as a further advertising of the event. We again displayed the cakes at lunch. Anyone who purchased a raffle ticket had to place it on a specific cake. This was a difficult choice, as they all looked so delicious and professional. The raffle was held at the end of the day, prior to the dismissal of classes, so the winners could pick up their cakes and take them home.
We were very pleased with the turnout of events and with the amount of money we raised, and will, most likely, repeat this event next year. It was great to see all the members so enthusiastic about helping out and it really brought everyone together.
