A busy group of eight students in Nancy Clue's class have taken on the responsibility
of composting for the school. This is their second year of having a vermicomposter
from The Worm Factory.
Vermicomposters are indoor composters that use worms - red wigglers - to break
down food waste and turn it into nutrient rich soil. The 'student of the week'
is responsible for collecting and dumping the class compost bucket and feeding
the worms. They also dump food scraps into the large outdoor composter in the
Learning Garden. Patrick says you quickly find out what the worms like and
dislike.
The students harvest the worms in June and September, separating the worms from their castings. This nutrient-rich, natural fertilizer and soil conditioner is put into their Learning Garden.
The students all have a role to play in composting at school and many said it was good training for them. Mitchell said he would be able to compost at home when the city made it mandatory.
