An Ecological Footprint Assignment

February 24, 2006

Derek Heffernan, a Social Science Teacher at Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School, has engaged his students in an interesting project. As part of the Applied Geography course students are working on an ecological foot print assignment. The project has students researching and reporting on ways to improve the balance between human needs and natural systems. In order to calculate their footprint, students completed the following questionnaire (courtesy of The Recycling Council of Ontario), http://www.rco.on.ca/ecofootprint.html. They were also required to develop a poster to encourage environmental responsibility. We've added links to PDF samples of these posters to the right hand side of this page and details of the lesson plan are available in the Lesson and Activities section.

The students have been enthusiastic in their response to the assignment and have learned a lot about their role as environmental stewards. These students can see themselves making a difference! Should you wish more information about this project, contact Derek_Heffernan@ocdsb.ca
