Earth Day at Elizabeth Wyn Wood Secondary Alternate Site
June 20, 2010
Our school is named after a famous Canadian sculptor from the early 20th century, so when an opportunity to create sculptures comes along, most of our students jump in with enthusiasm. On Earth Day, we held a Waste-to-Art competition. Both students and teachers collected materials from home and classroom, diverting garbage from the landfill or recycling facility, towards our creativity.
Some of the sculptures were created by classes that worked together. Some students chose to go it alone. All enjoyed using their creative talents, and staff and students were all amazed to see wheat could emerge from the garbage.
When the judging was done, Sarah Langridge took first place with a piece made from old junk that she was getting rid of. The theme of Sarah’s work is the difference between the sparkly version of disposable goods that corporations present, and the ugly truth of pollution created by a consumer lifestyle. We sent Sarah’s sculpture to the EarthCARE Expo, where it won the David Suzuki Award.
