Recycling Update from Glebe
June 15, 2008
Due to a change in Goulburn's recycling pick-up, we now recycle every Thursday morning. This year, we have experimented with posting "DO" and "DON'T" signs above the recycling bins in the hallways. These signs display pictures of items which can and cannot be recycled. Hopefully, students will pay attention to these, so we don't have to spend so much time sorting the materials.
We have also tried to involve other students in the recycling program, namely, two grade 10 Civics classes. We have shown the teachers and students how to conduct and monitor this activity. They will incorporate this into the Civics curriculum as part of the "Good Citizenship" expectation. We plan to re-evaluate this task at the end of this semester. Hopefully, the Civics teachers and students will be agreeable to taking on the recycling next year.
Our greatest challenge this year has been in keeping track of the recycling boxes. So many of them have "gone walking", that we now encourage classroom teachers to label empty cardboard boxes from photocopy paper and use these for recycling paper. For some reason, these don't like to "wander" as much!
