EarthCARE Students in Action
Beyond the Blue Box and the Curriculum
March 5, 2006
Teachers at Jack Donohue Public School have incorporated recycled materials into their curriculum. Children in a primary class use cardboard boxes, egg cartons, toilet paper rolls, etc., to build objects at an activity table. In a junior class, recycled materials are used to build bridges and in an intermediate class, recycled materials are used to demonstrate hydraulics.
One of the teachers has solved the problem for students who need to have a bag to carry things home. On the back of the classroom door is a "bag holder". Used plastic grocery bags are conveniently stored in the holder and when a student needs one is able to get it quickly.
They can see themselves making a difference!
