EarthCARE in Action
Megamo, helping
students realize that through their creativity and imagination there are many
ways to use a product that might have been otherwise discarded
'Megamo' joins the Grade 5s at Katimavik
May 2, 2007
Megamo is the latest addition to the grade 5 class at Katimavik Elementary School. Megamo's name is a combination of the names of the first
person and the last person in the class list. He is built from recycled materials during science lessons, integrating ideas from EarthCARE into a unit on "Force".
Students worked in groups. Each group chose a body part to build. Ears were made
from outdoor patio lights, eyes from glass of an old overhead projector, arms
from dryer ducts, and legs from old computer discs combined with the packing
materials from a freezer. The grade 5 students learned that many items can
be reused in a new form rather than being discarded. Creating Megamo helped
students realize that through their creativity and imagination there are many
ways to use a product that might have been otherwise discarded.
