This program includes a video, which shows students a behind the scenes look
at a landfill and a recycling plant. The message in the video is to rethink
garbage; from how much they create to the choices they make each day around
its disposal. The video demonstrates why sending unwanted 'stuff' to the landfill
should be a last resort. It is supported by corresponding curriculum at each
grade level that has been written by three OCDSB teachers.
Other speakers included Councillor Peggy Feltmate and Richard Hewitt, Deputy City Manager. For their participation in the launch the students were presented with two vermicomposters from The Worm Factory.
Principal Powell recognized her EarthCARE team, commending them for their 'passion,
support and countless hours to run a super program at Katimavik'. EarthCARE
team leader, Marie-Josee Morisset, meets weekly with the EarthCARE team and
supervises their recycling efforts. Plans are underway for new initiatives
in the coming months.
