Earth Day/Week a LEAF-y Success

With the help of Lisgar's Environmental Action Force (LEAF) the whole school celebrated Earth Week, which was full of activities. All week long there was the sale of reusable water bottles, discouraging the use of disposable water bottles; there was also fresh orange juice alongside the LCI water bottles.
Another thing that lasted all week was the encouragement to cycle to school; cyclists were eligible to enter a raffle for a bike lock and gift certificate and on the Wednesday they were rewarded with baked goods. Outside at lunch all week was the Clothing Swap, where students brought in the clothes they no longer wore and exchanged them for new-found clothes brought in by fellow students. Leftover clothes were taken to the Salvation Army.
Also, taking advantage of the sunny weather in the mall, there was a marvellous veggie lunch on Tuesday; members of LEAF made delicious vegetarian food which was offered as a buffet meal at a reasonable price, especially if you brought your own plate. Yumm-y!
Winding down the week was the showing of an environmental documentary at lunch on Thursday, while some LEAF members attended an Earth Day event (LEAForum) at the Museum of Nature, and learned about organic farming and sustainability. “Lights out” took place on Friday afternoon, when teachers were asked to turn off some of the lights used in each classroom., to reduce energy consumption.
All in all it was a great week and LEAF looks forward to many
more events to come.
