It Isn't Easy Being Green, But McGregor Easson Public School Isn't Afraid Of A Challenge

January 2, 2007

Kermit The Frog is famous for his song, It Isn't Easy Being Green, and the students, staff, and parent community of McGregor Easson Public School would agree with him - but they know it's worth it.

The school was recognized on Monday, December 11 by SEEDS Canada as an official GREEN SCHOOL. SEEDS Canada has been providing energy and environmental education programs for the past 30 years. These programs have educated and inspired realistic environmental choices and promoted positive environmental action by millions of students and their families.

Kaari Hukkala, a Grade 2 teacher at McGregor Easson says the entire school community joined together and completed 100 different environmental projects to achieve the GREEN SCHOOL status. The projects ranged from supporting litterless lunches, to developing a vermi-culture project for kindergarten students, to producing an environmentally friendly play.

The GREEN SCHOOL status is awarded by SEEDS Canada after classes log their project results and report them to SEEDS. By keeping records of their achievements, schools gradually work towards 100 projects to become recognized as an environmental green school. McGregor Easson school has achieved that status and they are not stopping there. The school hopes to give itself a well deserved pat on the back and then get back to work as they attempt to reach JADE STATUS (250 environmental projects).

The Director of SEEDS will award the school its plaque of distinction at the award ceremony. McGregor Easson is a culturally diverse school, where over 26 different first languages are spoken. This school has recognized and championed caring for the environment as a global cause that reaches beyond cultures.
