International Walk to School Week

December 26, 2007

October 1 - 5th, 2007 was International Walk to School Week. TWIGS decided to add biking to the challenge, in order to make it more inclusive for those students and staff who have a long distance to come. TWIGS encouraged every first period class to compete against one another during the Walk or Bike to School Week. In promoting this initiative, TWIGS hoped that Glebites would use alternate modes of transportation to help decrease fossil fuels.

The prizes for this competition were a Golden Shoe Award (constructed by committee members using an old shoe and some left-over lumber from Mr. Peter?s carpentry class) and home-baked goodies. Over the 4-day week, teachers counted how many students walked or cycled to school every day. Sixteen classes in total participated. Ms. Rimes' grade 9 girls' Phys. Ed. Class won the prize with 60.8% of students walking/cycling to school!
